Germany week 34 Barcelona day 3
Hello all
Today we did the hop on bus again so we started by hopping off at the palace-- see below.  Last night when we saw the fountain show.  At night the fountains do a water show.  It is spectacular.  We decided to get off there and then at a market and then went went to the cable car rides.  I am always nervous about the heights but I sat with my back to the down and only looked up and that seemed to help.  We went up to a great fort from the Spanish American war.  They had an archery area set up and gardens and the fort itself was wonderful.  They had cannons pointed to sea.  Gregg said they were aiming for whatever came from the sea to threaten Barcelona.  We have a couple of shots on the cannons.  We ate at a little outdoor cafe there and it seems that when you eat at a fort it is a bit more reasonable than at the king's palace.  We got a bit more food and it didn't cost 80 dollars. LOL A few other things I learned is that a lot of Barcelona used to be separate -there were lots of little suburbs type residential areas and they started incorportating them a couple of decades ago which is why now Barcelona is so large.  Another thing is that before the 1990s and the Olympics the rich people lived inland-- as a matter of fact the further from the coast you lived the more affluent you were thought to be, but that all changed with the Olympics of 92.  Oh if only we had invested in coastal land in the 80s  I can never hit that just right.  LOL
We went back to the beach, it was a beautiful day.  There was even a topless sunbather which Gregg said she shouldn't have been sunbathing.  Isn't that the way it aways is?  LOL
He went back to the casino and won at blackjack so he was happy.  I sat out on the Beach area and just soaked up the sun.

Hello all
Today we got up and went to the zoo since it was right across the street and the hop on bus gave us discount tickets to the zoo so we thought why not use them.  It was fantastic.  We went to a dolphin show and it was really good.  There were lots of animals I had never seen lots of primates from South America that had hair that looked like people hair.  They were very small and in an enclosed area where you could not take pictures but I got lots of pictures other places. 
We also went to the Las Ramblas--  if you will notice there is a picture of the AK47 Russian rifles in the store here. I guess they don't do much with gun control here.  
One other thing about Barcelona is it is an artist area.  Almost all of the villages and buildings had a great artist who sculpted or did them and that was also the same on the Las Ramblas street-- there were many artists on the street. Gregg insisted on me getting a portrait done here.  You can see me sitting for the portrait and then the finished product.  I think the artist was very kind to me.  He took a few years off.  Thanks artist.
We just got up this AM and they are still partying on the street --it's 6AM this place never closes down.  LOL
We head back today so by the time I send this we will be in Germany.
With that I will close until next week it's back to work for me.

Germany week 34 Barcelona Day 1 & 2
Hello all
Well we landed in Barcelona.  Finally an airport that was an actual airport close to the city from Ryan air  although I am not complaining.  I couldn't have seen nearly as much without good ole Ryan Air.  We found our hotel and you know this is always a "not know till you get there type thing."  Well this place is a condo and is fully equipped with a kitchen bedroom, living and big deck.  It is super and location it is right across the street from the large park with the Barcelona Zoo, walking distance to the beach, and best of all there is a couple of very reasonable restaurants, a grocery store and the hop on hop off bus stop right at our door.  Fro us the location was ideal.  It is also walking distance to the Las Ramblas the major thoroughfare in Barcelona.
The first day we had to sit at the the little outdoor cafe and drink coffee and eat lunch waiting on the guy to come and open the door.  That was really nice and gave us a chance to get to know the layout and ask the cafe owner lots of questions.
We got into our place and walked to the park.  They have their own Arc de Triumph here it is called Arc de Trivoli.  See below.  The gold topped building was put here in 1888 and  this city houses 3 million people and is called the "Spanish Riviera."  The day was gorgeous and we walked all around our area first day.  We went down to the beach and of course Gregg found the casino so we had to visit there a bit,.
The second day we got the two day pass for the hop on hop off bus.  It took us all day to do the lines--they run 12 hours to go the routes.  The have three routes so we took them all.  We had to come back to the condo for a bit since it seems that my visa did not work here because the credit union said there was too much fraud in Spain so they would not allow it to go here.  Since they did not accept American express I had to go cash which depleted most of my Euros so we sent searching for an exchange.  Now that was a mess they really try to rip you off.  Finally we found a place that the cafe owner guided us to --a reputable place and we were able to exchange the money at a reasonable rate.
We went the three different bus routes.  They went to the highest point , by lots of museums, by the Sagrada family church that was huge --see picture below it is the one with all of the spikes.  We also went by the Olympic stadium they hosted the Olympics in 1992.  By the time we got through with all three routes and dropped by the beach and casino for about 45 minutes it was time for the last route on the hop on hop off bus.
One funny thing they said on the tour was that "most restaurants and shops are open until 9pm and most stay open during lunch."  It seems that it is really true the Spanish take the Siestas in the middle of the day.  Lots of shops closed around 12 or 1:30 and opened back up two hours later.
To say the least Barcelona is beautiful and has so many different things to offer.  I would definitely put this on my list of Europe to visit if any of you are thinking of coming.
